Chloe

Chloe (2009)

In the erotic thriller Chloe, Dr. Catherine Stewart (Julianne Moore, A Single Man) suspects that her husband David (Liam Neeson, Taken) is cheating on her. So she hires an escort named Chloe (Amanda Seyfried, Mamma Mia!) to offer herself to him, to see how he responds--but Catherine has a surprising response to what unfolds, and Chloe becomes drawn deeply into the doctor's life. Chloe is an atypical "Hollywood" film from Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica), as it features big stars, a script Egoyan didn't write himself (it's by Erin Cressida Wilson, the screenwriter of Secretary), an editing rhythm notably less idiosyncratic than Egoyan films of old, and an ending that feels forced and unsatisfying. But Chloe explores classic Egoyan obsessions: voyeurism, jealousy, and betrayal. As the movie unfolds, the performances are full of rich details, capturing jagged emotional edges that make the somewhat-implausible plot compelling. Chloe doesn't have the uncanny psychological acuity of Egoyan's best films, but anyone who's enjoyed this unique director's earlier work will find much to enjoy. -- (by Bret Fetzer)

Rome and Juliet

Rome and Juliet (2006)

Rome and Juliet has all the elements of a typical love story. It starts with a Girl and a Guy in a long and secure relationship. Girl meets Someone New. They immediately click and form a deep friendship. They discover that they like the same things. They even feel that they’ve known each other for a long time. They spend a lot of time together, and unknowingly, they fall for each other. Guy becomes wary and suspects Girl but his doubts remain unfounded. By this point, the sexual tension between Girl and Someone New is so obvious to everyone but themselves. One day, Someone New’s Old Flame returns. Girl gets consumed by jealousy over Old Flame and acts bitchy. A shouting match ensues between Girl and Someone New that climaxes in an accidental kiss. Ultimately, they realize that they are made for each other and they go for it. Boy catches them taking a shower together. Expectedly, there are complications along the way but in the end they get to live happily ever after.
Basically, this sums up the plot but Connie Macatuno’s movie debut is loads more than a cliché. And of course, Someone New is a woman.
Juliet (Andrea del Rosario) is a soft spoken, gentle natured, skirt-clad preschool teacher from the barrios. Her father suffered from stroke and she being the eldest assumed the role of being the provider for the family. She and her Councilor boyfriend Marc (Rafael Rosel) has been together for 3 years. She is the role model of her students and the envy of her co-teachers. See, she is your contemporary Maria Clara, except that she is not. She does things that will make the Catholic Church cringe – sex before marriage and The Pills (shudder). Meanwhile, Rome is the epitome of the modern Pinay – lives alone, runs her own business and after a fiancé running away from her 3 years ago, treats men as disposable commodities in her life. Both are looking for “The One”. Marc proposes to Juliet. Juliet finds Rome in asks her to plan her wedding. Discoveries, trouble, more discoveries and transformations follow. (

Sappho

Sappho  2008

Sappho, a newly wed American wife, with her husband on the Greek island Lesbos, goes through the pain of unrequited love to a young woman, very much like the namesake poet in ancient times.  "And? What comes next?" "It's lost. We'll never know." "Perhaps we should decide for ourselves" Sappho is a provocative and passionate love story set in the 1920s - not to be watched with children or with parents. Millionaire's daughter Sappho Lovell arrives on the Greek island of Lesbos for her honeymoon with her artist husband Phil. There she meets Helene, the daughter of a Russian archaeologist, and she falls in love with her. As our three lovers live out a complex girl-boy-girl sexual triangle, Sappho also comes to believe that she is the reincarnation of the ancient poetess Sappho - that Sappho who first put the "lesbian" in Lesbos. However, our modern Sappho does realize how the ancient Sappho's legend ends... Inspired by the poems of Sappho (Written by Robert Crombie

Las Aparicio

 Las Aparicio 2010

Las Aparicio New clips from the Mexican television series featuring prominent lesbian characters and debuting in April.
Las Aparicio is sort of like … if you take Desperate Housewives and you kill off all the men and call it something entirely different, like: Lots of Widows and a Confused Lesbisexual. I’m sure that was one of the titles they threw around before settling on Las Aparicio. Aparicio is the family name. And it’s all about the women. Let’s meet the Fab Four:
Rafaela Aparicio – Matriarch, widow three times over, and badass rich lady. She’s all feminist wisdom and attitude. She’s all, “Grrrls, we don’t need no men. Burn them bras! RAWR!” But waaaay more subtle than that. 'Cause she’s a lady. But she will cut you.
Alma Aparicio – She’s the eldest daughter. She one of those people that makes you feel really unproductive and like you haven’t done anything with your life. She’s a doctor (Ph.D. not M.D.) and she owns a gallery and she runs a male escort service and she teaches classes. See? Don’t you feel like a loser?
Mercedes Aparicio – Mercedes is the mother of one bratty pre-adolescent girl named Isadora, who will probably grow up to be awesome like her mother but isn’t quite there yet. Mercedes is recently widowed because her husband died while sleeping with another woman. Mercedes is a bit broken and confused and angry at her husband and also angry at men that treat women like crap. I love her sort of a lot.
Julia Aparicio – Julia’s the youngest daughter and so she’s not yet a widow because she hasn’t gotten married yet. But she’s dating a fantastical jerk who sleeps around on her. She’s got a lot of feelings about all of that. But mostly, she’s got a lot of feelings for her awesome lesbian best friend, Mariana.
The story of our beloved las Aparicio begins in the family mansion where there’s a party in full swing. Except, wait, it’s not a party. It’s a wake. It’s a wake for Mercedes’ husband (the one that kicked the bucket while doing the nasty with some other woman). Here is where we learn that the Aparicio women are rumored to be cursed because all of their husbands meet an untimely death. My guess is that Doña Rafaela is a retired wizard from Hogwarts and she put a spell on the family that would protect all the women from a-holes. But I doubt it’s a curse. It’s more likely that they all died from being stupid

Julia Y Mariana
Julia is in this unfortunate relationship with a guy named um … I forget. Armando. Whatever. He sleeps around and she knows it. He tries to explain to her why he can’t be faithful by saying he’s a soccer player and women flock to him which just makes her go WTF at him. He then tries proposing to her, which doesn’t go over any better. She refuses. He asks her if there’s someone else and she pauses eeeeever so briefly before saying no. She’s obviously unhappy with him, but she doesn’t break up with him.
Mariana then interrupts this totally effed up conversation. Mariana is Julia’s best friend. Beautiful. Chef. Lesbian. A general bundle of awesomeness. Julia’s interruption effectively kills the conversation and Armando goes away. Julia thanks Mariana for her awesome timing. She grabs Mariana’s face and says, “I love you.”

Bloomington

Bloomington 2010

Bloomington, a tale of sordid, Sapphic love between a psychology professor and an undergraduate student, is Fernanda Cardoso’s first full-length feature film.  Professor Catherine Stark (Allison McAtee) is a cougar on the prowl, infamous throughout the university for her lesbian liaisons with her students, and is generally feared by the student body a bastion of intimidation—some students even believe her to be a vampire.  Her newest conquest is Jackie Kirk (Sarah Stouffer), a doe-eyed, former child television star turned college freshman. The plot details the development and rapid decline of their relationship, as Jackie leaves school to return to acting, while Professor Stark gets the ax after the administration discovers her scandalous affair.
Bloomington promises audiences another take on the sexy student-teacher dynamic, but it ultimately disappoints because the narrative lacks coherence, which is perhaps due to the remarkably amateurish editing of the film’s scenes.  When time is of the essence for the sustainability of intimate relationships, and when such emphasis is placed on the sustainability of intimate relationships, and when such emphasis is placed on the generational differences between Jackie and Catherine in particular, it becomes difficult to comprehend the intensity and depth of their relationship. In other words, the narrative disconnect that occurs as a result of shoddy editing makes it impossible to believe that the two have a serious, intimate relationship, which makes it impossible, in turn, to sense the dramatic sincerity of the relationship’s dissolution.(cherrygrrl.com/movie-review-bloomington)

Amar en tiempos revueltos 2010

Amar en tiempos revueltos

Amar en Tiempos Revueltos (“Love in Difficult Times”) is a soap opera set in the years of the Spanish civil war and Franco dictatorship. While that is a feat in itself – setting a story a couple decades ago and making it believable – tackling a story of friendship and love between two women in those times is something to be commended for.
The show is currently in its fifth season and has been featuring the developing relationship between Ana (Marina San José) and Teresa (Carlota Olcina) since their initial meeting at the end of the third season (the years 1948 through 1950).
The story begins when the two literally bump into each other at the Rivas Department Stores. Ana is pushing a clothing rack while Teresa isn’t paying attention to where she is walking.
Having just come back from a bad meeting with José María (the chief of staff of the Rivas Department Stores where Teresa applied for a job), she starts crying when she notices that on top of the bad meeting, her new skirt is torn after she bumped into Ana and fell on the floor.
Ana, of course, is immediately apologetic and wants to fix the dress or buy her a new one. Teresa tries to ward off Ana, but Ana is quite persistent and literally drops to her knees to make things okay (while fixing the skirt).
The girls take a walk together while Teresa explains everything that happened in the meeting; in short – she got shot down because she is a woman.(Written by Chantal /alrightstill.net)

D.E.B.S

D.E.B.S 2004

Holland Taylor plays the task-master head of the D.E.B.S. organization, and Michael Clarke Duncan has a small role as the head of the D.E.B.S. school. D.E.B.S. are chosen based on their scores on a secret test embedded with the S.A.T. that measures the ability to cheat, lie, and kill (looking good in their plaid school-girl uniforms appears to be a requirement, too).
The leader of this particular group of D.E.B.S. is Max (Megan Goode of Eve's Bayou, Deliver Us from Evie, and Biker Boyz), an assertive, serious young woman who works hard to keep everything running smoothly.

The French-accented Dominique (Devon Aoki of 2 Fast 2 Furious) sleeps with a different guy every night and never goes anywhere without a cigarette in her mouth,

while earnest Janet (Jill Ritchie, reprising her role from the short film on which the feature is based) tries desperately to prove her worth to Max.

Finally, we have girl-next-door Amy (Sara Foster), frequently referred to as "The Perfect Score" because she performed so well on the secret test. Amy has just broken up with her boyfriend, fellow government-agent Bobby (Geoff Stults from 7th Heaven), because she's not in love with him, and he's having a hard time letting go.
The D.E.B.S.' evil arch-enemy,

Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster), is also having a hard time getting over being dumped by a girl. A career criminal whose list of bad deeds include trying to sink Australia, Lucy is shrouded in mystery to everyone but her trusty assistant,

Scud (Jimmi Simpson), since no one has ever fought Lucy and lived to tell about it.
After a funny Charlie's Angels-type opening, the film follows the D.E.B.S. as they are assigned to secretly monitor a meeting between Lucy Diamond and a beautiful Russian assassin, Ninotchka (Jessica Cauffiel), who embodies every American movie stereotype of a Russian femme fatale.
Turns out, it's not a meeting, but a blind date arranged by Scud. At dinner, Lucy figures out pretty quickly that Ninotchka's not the one for her, but before she can end the date, shooting breaks out in the restaurant and Lucy's on the run from the D.E.B.S. — until she runs into Amy (literally) and sparks begin to fly in a hilarious verbal exchange.
Smitten with Amy, Lucy begins to create opportunities for them to be together, despite Amy's initial unwillingness to acknowledge her attraction to Lucy. But their mutual attraction quickly becomes obvious, and Amy sneaks away to stay with Lucy for a few days so they can spend some time together.
The D.E.B.S. mistakenly believe Amy's been kidnapped, however, and organize a nationwide hunt to "rescue" Amy, only to find Lucy and Amy in a rather compromising position. Their relationship no longer a secret, Amy is finally forced to choose between her loyalty to the D.E.B.S. and her feelings for Lucy.(Sarah Warn)
